One Critical Business Practise

Writer: Alex van den HeeverAlex van den Heever

This is something that I cannot stress enough, make sure your taxes are up to date.

This might sound silly, but this is often overlooked. Besides the legal issues of not having a good tax status, it can also close some doors for future business opportunities.

Most of our clients that are larger corporations ask for our “Tax Compliance Status PIN”. The first time we got a request for this, there was a bit of a panic because we did not know what it was. Luckily, we use GovChain to help us with all these things that we don't fully understand. Fortunately, our taxes were up to date, the reason being that the PIN is used by the public to check if we are tax compliant or in good standing with SARS. IF we were not, the company would not have worked with us and lost out on a lot of business! Also, the PIN is only valid for 3 months, thereafter you need to request a new one!

Tax clearance certificates, annual returns, and VAT registration all gave me the heebie-jeebies, but there are companies such as GovChain that assist with all these nitty-gritty business documents.

Whether you use a service like GovChain or an accountant, make sure your taxes are ALWAYS in order.
