The best way to learn about your client is by doing research and by asking questions - be genuinely interested in their business or company. This will help you gather the correct information and to ensure the best end result.
Below are the very first three questions that we ask our clients:
What are the goals and objectives for this content?
We created a blog about this - Go check it out here.
Is it part of a marketing strategy or plan?
Simply put a marketing strategy is "a plan of action designed to promote and sell a product or service" - thanks Oxford Dictionary.
What’s the budget?
Understanding the budget will allow you to get an idea of how big the production can get.
These are just a few questions you need to ask your clients. Just remember the way you ask is important, you don't want your clients to feel like they’re being interrogated. So be mindful of your tone and language.
Sometimes a client won’t have the answers, so it’s also important to prepare for that scenario. For example, if they don’t know the objectives, you could prompt them to think in the shoes of the owner/superior. If you are speaking to the owner, ask them about their long term goals, and soon enough you’ll get an idea of what the answer to your question may look like.
Quick tip: Before having a meeting, jot down the questions you want to ask your client, this will help you to gather the information. And don't forget to write down keynotes during the meeting!
I did a Blog on How To Become Likeable In Meetings, this ties in with this topic!
